Depending on the company and the role you want to apply for, you might need some or all of these documents:

  • CV
  • Covering Letter

In addition, you might need copies of the following:

  • Reference letters from previous employment and/or education
  • Transcripts from university
  • Certificates of degrees or relevant certifications

A CV and a covering letter are usually a must in every job application. Whether you need to send the remaining documents, depends on the company and role you are applying for.

Typically, German companies, particularly the major ones like Volkswagen, Siemens, Bosch, etc. tend to ask for all of these documents in order to consider your application. For such companies, it would also be an advantage to have a CV and Covering Letter in German if the working language for the role is going to be German. Roles in startups typically only need a CV and a Covering Letter in English.

If you are have worked in Germany previously, do not forget to ask your previous employer for a reference letter (Arbeitszeugnis).

Reference Letters

If you have worked in Germany previously, do not forget to ask your previous employer for a reference letter (Arbeitszeugnis). This document is usually a thorough summary and recommendation of your performance as an employee. German companies particularly ask for this in the job application.
